Vidya Balan once again hit the red carpet at Bombay Talkies Premiere Cannes wearing another Sabyasachi saree. Well she did say that she was going to be wearing Sabyasachi Cannes Film Festival but we half expected that she might combine it with another designer outfit….but no not Vidya Balan. Setting that aside we think she looked chic. Probably brown and maroon are not our most favourite colours but by heck if we can look this chic should we really be complaining?

Ranbir Kapoor ‘first actress in front of whom I am a bit intimidated’

He vouches for friendly competition with his contemporaries, but Ranbir Kapoor confesses his “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” co-star Deepika Padukone is the only one in the industry who intimidates him.

Ayan Mukerji-directed “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” has brought the real life ex-couple together on the screen after five years – their first and the last film together was 2008 movie “Bachna Ae Haseeno”.

“I always expected from Deepika to reach very high levels, but I had no idea that she will become such a fine actress so soon. She is the first actress in front of whom I am a bit intimidated,” said Ranbir, who himself has wowed people with variety in roles he played in films “Wake Up Sid”, “Raajneeti”, “Rockstar” and “Barfi!”.

Talking about her growth in the industry, Ranbir said: “I felt like she was not doing what I expected her to do. That constant surprise was a good feeling. I know her so well. I know her advantages as well as disadvantages. She has turned her disadvantages into advantages. So, I am very happy for her.”

Most celebrities are hounded by rumours and Ranbir accepts it as part of an actor’s life.

“I can understand there is a demand for this. People want to know about their favourite actors and actresses – What they do? Who they can marry or not?

“But when it comes to you, you feel bad. But you have to focus on your work. Because when on Friday, your film releases, everyone forgets everything. It is part and parcel of the journey. You have to take it with a pinch of salt,” said the 30-year-old.

Do you like to read about your contemporaries?

“We are curious… but we are all friends. We don’t sit and bitch or gossip,” he said and explained that “cold war” don’t exist.

“I don’t think there is any cold war. I am fond of all the actors of my generation – be it Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Imran Khan, Varun Dhawan – all of us are busy with our work, we don’t really meet much. But we try and catch up at award functions and parties,” he said.

He admits there is competition, but a friendly one.

“There is a friendly, healthy competitive vibe going on. No one wants the other person to not do well. We get happy and jealous when we see a good performance, but we all congratulate each other and encourage each other. I guess it is too early in our careers to have this competition,” Ranbir said.

Sonam Kapoor wears nose ring at Cannes but she’s not the only one! (PHOTOS)

Among things Indian that Bollywood actresses Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor flaunted at the ongoing 66th Cannes International Film Festival, their bespoke nose rings, the traditional ‘nath’, drew immense attention. Designers believe this could set a trend of sorts among youth.

Sonam opted for a large nose ring to wear with an Anamika Khanna couture creation – an off-white sari teamed with an embellished full-sleeved jacket. Vidya, in turn, kept it traditional, with a Maharashtrian style ‘nath’ and wore it to compliment a Sabyasachi Mukherjee sari.

Fashionistas have opened up to the concept of wearing a nose ring.

“Earlier women used to wear nose rings only during the wedding ceremonies. But now they are wearing them everywhere – at dinner parties, beaches and even at corporate events,” Sumit Sawhney of Apala Innovative Jewellery, told IANS.

He said women are even ready to experiment.

“Nowadays women are looking for nose studs or rings inspired from traditional tribal jewellery. These nose rings are slightly big in size. They are usually created using silver. Women are also opting for nature-inspired designs like leaves and flowers. There are also nose rings in geometrical shapes,” Sawhney added.

The ‘nath’ has been a part of an Indian woman’s jewellery box since ages. It is worn on one side of the nostril. A lot of young girls prefer to flaunt a simple silver or gold ring, or rather a diamond or coloured stud on their piercing.

But traditional naths, complete with precious or semi-precious stones like diamonds, rubies and emeralds, and sometimes also in kundan and polki, are worn by many women – especially on festive occasions – as well as by brides at their weddings.

Bollywood actresses have adorned nose rings many times on screen: Remember Madhuri Dixit in the song “Humko aajkal ha”, Preity Zinta in “Veer-Zaara”, Kareena Kapoor in saucy number “Halkat jawaani”, Aishwarya Rai in “Jodhaa Akbar”, Rani Mukerji in “Aiyya” and Sonakshi Sinha in “Dabangg”?

Sonakshi is one actress who loves to flaunt her nose jewel even off screen and it goes well with all her looks. Even Hollywood celebrities like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Jessica Biel have embraced the charm of the jewel.

Designers believe the nose accessory can never go out of trend and it not just helps in making a bold style statement but also adds the oomph factor to one’s personality.

In fact, while many raised eyebrows over Vidya and Sonam’s decision to wear a nose ring at a prestigious red carpet gala like the Cannes fiesta, internationally known Ritu Beri said it added a “sassy vibe” to their look.

“It definitely adds a fun edge to the look,” Beri told IANS.

Tarang Arora of Amrapali Jewels, an Indian jewellery brand often flaunted by several Hollywood celebrities, said a whole variety of nose rings are on offer these days.

“We offer a variety of nose rings studded with gold and precious stones. We have also done some trendy nose rings in our collaborative collection with Manish Arora. It comprises nose rings, dazzling neckpieces, danglers and bracelets,” Arora told IANS.

Those with a spiritual bent of mind can also choose nose rings in shapes of yantras, Ganeshas, trishuls and idols of gods and goddesses from Apala Innovative Jewellery.

Prices start at Rs 1,500 and go up to Rs 15,000, but if you prefer simple studs or plain accessories to accentuate your nose, you can even head to the nearest street market. It’s easy on the pocket, and high on style!

Ranbir Kapoor: I would like spend the next 15 to 20 years of my life on film sets

Ranbir Kapoor says he would love to face the camera for films for the next 15 to 20 years, and that he also desires to direct movies in the future.

“I would like spend the next 15 to 20 years of my life on film sets and that I keep on getting opportunities to work with good directors. That is my plan, but whenever we make plans, god laughs at us. I hope to continue working as an actor,” the 30-year-old actor said here.

“I want to make movies also . That’s something I would love to do – direct a movie,” added Ranbir at a promotional event for his forthcoming film “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”.

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” also features Deepika Padukone. It releases May 31.

Ritu Beri gives thumbs up to Vidya, Sonam’s Cannes look

Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor may have received a mixed reaction for their red carpet appearances at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival but fashion designer Ritu Beri feels proud about their ensemble selections.

She has hailed them for choosing an “Indian” look for the event.

Vidya made three appearances in traditional Indian costumes – a maroon lehenga, an ivory sari paired with a brown blouse and a light pink anarkali, for three different occasions on one day.

On the kick-off day, Sonam was spotted at the star-studded premiere of “The Great Gatsby” in an Anamika Khanna couture creation – an off-white sari teamed with a lattice work full-sleeve jacket. To add a zing to her look, she even wore a nose ring.

Later in the day, Sonam opted for a black lace lehanga by Mumbai based designer Shehla Khan at the film fest.

Beri says that choosing Indian apparel on international platform was definitely “not an over-do”.

“Saris and lehengas have their own charm and represent India well. In fact, the Indian sensibility is being well acknowledged internationally. It makes me proud that Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor took the classic Indian look for the red carpet. They looked absolutely gorgeous,”

She also said that the nose-ring donned by both the actresses, and the fact that Vidya covered her head with a veil added a “sassy vibe to the look”.

“It definitely adds a fun edge to the look and where else are we going to going to bring this drama if not in Cannes,” said Beri, who became the first Indian designer to present a show in Paris, where she successfully launched her first luxe collection in 1998.

When it comes to fashion and style, Deepika Padukone puts the best foot forward. The model-turned-actress feels it is good to keep up with the times, but suggests fashion trends should not be followed blindly.

“Don’t try and follow fashion blindly. Yes, of course, trends keep changing, fashion keeps changing and people believe that you should keep up with the times and I don’t think that’s a bad thing to do. But think at the same time, you should not forget your own personality, the person that you are, your body type, your confidence level and dress accordingly,” said the actress while sharing fashion tips at an event.

“The worst thing that you can do to yourself is to be uncomfortable in something that you are wearing. That discomfort will always show in your body language and on your face,” added the 27-year-old.

Deepika will next be seen in “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”, releasing May 31, along with Ranbir Kapoor.

Sussanne Roshan ‘I am a very hardworking mother and my kids keep me fit’

Bollywood’s popular interior designer Sussanne Roshan says that being a working woman and running after her children keep her fit and energetic all the time.

Sussanne is married to Hindi film superstar Hrithik Roshan and the couple has two sons – Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

“I am a very hardworking mother and my kids keep me fit. Also, being a working mother, you are always on the go. You always have too many things to do, so you don’t have the chance to be lazy and I think that keeps me fit and motivated,” she told IANS when asked about her fitness mantra.

Sussanne has an Associate of Arts Degree in interior design from Brooks College in Long Beach, California. She first started working with the interior firm of her mother Zarine, wife of actor-filmmaker Sanjay Khan.

She is a full-fledged interior designer and owner of Suzanne Roshan’s House of Design. Known for her good work, she was roped in by actresses like Rani Mukerji and Priyanka Chopra to do their homes.

Talking about her love for designing, she said: “I have always been a design student and my mind focused on design from the very young age. So, for me, creativity is a very satisfying and motivating process.”

She is not the only star wife who is into interior designing, actress Twinkle Khanna, wife of actor Akshay Kumar, has also joined the race.

Is there any competition?

“I do my work with only one intention and that I have to think different, nothing else matters to me. I don’t get involved in any other things. They all are my friends,” she said.

Sabyasachi’s look for Vidya Balan “a purist ethnic look, almost like a Golconda princess”.

Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the man behind styling Vidya Balan’s look at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival, says that as “India is known as a bling country” he used a “little embellishment” to bring freshness.

Vidya made three appearances in traditional Indian costumes – maroon lehenga, an ivory sari paired with a brown blouse and light pink anarkali – on three different occasions on the festival inaugural day Wednesday.

Mukherjee says she was dressed in “a purist ethnic look, almost like a Golconda princess”.

Drawing inspiration from William Dalrymple’s book “The White Mughal” and the bygone days of princesses, the outfits were made with Indian textiles such as khadi, kanjeevaram, handspun cottons, and Benarsi textiles.

The designs were accessorised with traditional jewellery, strings of pearls, sapphires and beautifully set polkis by Amrapali and Pankaj Surana.

“India has always been a country of excess, rather than minimalism. We brought back what India truly stands for. Cannes saw a representation of Indian textiles and handicrafts. The jewellery is by Pankaj Surana and Amrapali,” the designer said in a statement

At Great Gatsby Premiere in Anamika Khanna love the outfit but ABSOLUTELY hate the nose ring. Top right in Huemn black and white sari and gold Suhani Pittie earrings we were not able to make an informed decision whether she looked good or hot or down right plain but probably will hover and say that it’s a nice enough look but not ravishing. Now where is the mushy digestive?

Veena Malik ‘I have my personal views and vision and can be a politician’

Pakistani actress Veena Malik, who is currently busy with her Bollywood films, says that she plans to join politics and fulfil her father’s dream.

She told IANS: “I have intentions to join politics, but right now I feel I am very immature. When I feel it’s the right time, I shall join politics.”

“My father always wanted me to be in Pakistan and join politics. I will certainly fulfil his dream as his daughter,” she added.

The actress says her father wants her to be in Pakistan and wants her to always wear a salwar suit.

“My father wanted me to be a lawyer and be in Pakistan. As I was associated with Pakistan news channels, he understood that I have my personal views and vision and can be a politician,” the 29-year-old said.

“He likes me in salwar kurta and always wants to see me in them. Whenever I am with him, I try to wear a salwar kameez with a duppata,” she added.

She is also gearing up for her film “Zindagi 50:50″, which is slated for release a May 24.

Veena says: “I am excited that this is my first film which will release in Pakistan on the same day (as in India). My parents can watch the film there and they are looking forward to it.”

“Madhuri is great and I am glad I got an opportunity to dance with her. She is very talented, very hardworking and always on time. I also kissed on her cheek. It was lovely,” said the 30-year-old.

“Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is scheduled to release May 31. The film also features Deepika Padukone.

Lisa Ray ‘Launching Lisa Ray for Satya Paul on May 23 in Canada’

Indo-Canadian actress Lisa Ray has teamed up with Satya Paul, the label known for its signature print saris, to launch a limited edition of 10 saris. The actress, who battled cancer, wants to share the message of “victory and love” through her collection and part of the sales will go to a cancer centre.

“Launching Lisa Ray for Satya Paul on May 23 in Canada. These saris tell a story… and they are ‘maha’ sexy and vibrant,” tweeted Lisa.

The 41-year-old, who was raised in Toronto by an Indian father and Polish mother, moved to India at the age of 16 to try her luck in showbiz.

From modelling to appearing in music videos of popular songs like “Afreen Afreen” and “Har Taraf Tera Jalwa” to doing Telugu film “Takkari Donga”, Hindi movies “Kasoor”, crossover cinema “Bollywood/Hollywood” and Oscar- nominated “Water”, Lisa was active in showbiz in the 1990s and 2000.

But things took a sad turn in 2009, when she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, but after two years of treatment she was cancer-free and in 2012 she married Jason Dehni in California’s Napa Valley.

In partnership with the Indian brand Satya Paul, Lisa has created an exclusive range of saris for this wedding season to share her life story.

“Living with Multiple Myeloma, I have learned that the progress of the human spirit doesn’t stop with obstacles and challenging circumstances. I want to share my message of victory and love with others with the collection,” Lisa said in a statement.

The collection that is already available at the designer store in New Delhi and Mumbai, will now be available in Toronto.

Tami Esmail, president of Satya Paul Canada, says that “Lisa personifies the ideal Satya Paul woman – confident and courageous yet feminine and beautiful both inside and out”.

A portion of the sales from the collection in Canada will benefit the Molly and David Bloom Chair at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

The Bloom Chair supports Multiple Myeloma research and the development of life-extending treatments for this treatable yet incurable form of cancer

One of the best looking actors of Hindi cinema model-turned Arjun Rampal, also known for his fashion sense, doesn’t take the titles given to him seriously.

“I am not metrosexual. I am not macho. I am normal. I don’t even wear nail paint,” Arjun, 40, face of Nivea Men’s cream, told reporters at the announcement of new global brand position for the men’s range here Tuesday.

“I will make sure that I am the most desirable man of 2013 or else Nivea will throw me out. I don’t believe in taking these tags seriously. It’s just a perception. Everybody can be desirable if they take care of themselves,” said the National Award-winning actor known for his work in films like “Rock On!!” and “Raajneeti”.

Falguni Peacock ‘Indian cinema is very big on high-end fashion’ (INTERVIEW)

Big-budget Indian movies are setting trends in high-end fashion and costume designing; say Falguni and Shane Peacock, who have designed for the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez as well as Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu back home.

“Indian cinema and fashion have always gone hand in hand. In each time period, a fashion trend has evolved due to Indian cinema. So, for instance, the 1970s saw the hippie trend and flower power in Indian cinema. The current Indian cinema is very big on high-end fashion,” Falguni told IANS.

Added Shane: “We have big budget movies such as ‘Cocktail’, ‘Student of The Year’ and ‘Race 2′, which spent a lot of money on designer wear and designer bags or shoes. Every era has created a different fashion statement. India as a country is very big on Bollywood so everything seen on our actors and actresses is aped by generations.”

The Mumbai-based husband-and-wife introduced their label in August 2002. Their inspiration is all about a fusion of western cuts and Indian embellishments for a global appeal.

They created ripples in the international market by showcasing at the London Fashion Week four years ago and participating at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin for the second time last year. The show was attended by American singer Ashanti and actress Michelle Williams, both of whom wore their outfits.

Recently, singer-actress Demi Lovato chose a bold trendy outfit made by them. The two also styled the entire look of the back-dancers in Madonna’s Super Bowl performance.

Now they are in the news again for designing an underwater themed wedding gown for tattoo artist Kat Von D, who got engaged to electronic music artist Joel Zimmerman, a.k.a. Deadmau5, in December last year.

“The details of her weddings gown are yet to be finalised. Kat’s design sensibility is very unique. She will never dress like the typical bride. Her wedding theme is underwater so even the outfit will be inspired from the theme in terms of colours, cuts,” said Falguni, whose dream is to design for Kristen Stewart, Keira Knighley and Gwyneth Paltrow.

How do they see the Indian fashion industry evolving?

“We see that people in the Indian fashion industry are becoming more aware of international brands and international designers. Everyone seems to know the latest fashion trends. Our celebrities are constantly spotted in the latest collection of these high-end brands and designer wear. There is an influx of luxury brands, which was a rare commodity 10 years back,” said Shane.

They also feel that there is a lot of talent in the Indian fashion industry.

“There are a lot of designers who are extremely creative. The younger lot has a fresh perspective but it’s not like the newbies are more evolved in terms of creativity. All designers — be it new, young or old — are constantly evolving in terms of creativity. The day a designers creative thoughts become stagnant, his work will stop being sought after,” said Falguni.

So what next?

“We are in process of opening a store in NYC. We hope we find a great location soon,” she told IANS.
